Birka Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Birka Hotel on Luntmakargatan, you immediately get that classic Stockholm vibe — it’s tucked into this charming street in Norrmalm that feels both central and surprisingly quiet. The building itself has that understated Swedish elegance, nothing flashy, but you can tell it’s well-maintained. I mean, this is a three-star property, so don’t expect marble lobbies or anything, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the entrance that puts you at ease right away.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about this hotel’s location — it’s honestly one of those spots where you feel like you’ve cracked some kind of code. You’re literally in the heart of the city, but on a street that locals actually use, not some tourist trap boulevard. The couples who stay here consistently rate the location 9.3 out of 10, and I totally get why. You can walk to Gamla Stan in about ten minutes, hit the main shopping areas even faster, and there’s this great mix of cafes and local spots right around the corner that you’d never find if you were staying in some generic hotel district.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — very Swedish in that “every square meter counts” way. The beds are comfortable enough, and honestly, the windows let in great natural light, which matters more than you’d think during those short winter days. The bathrooms are clean and functional, nothing fancy but everything works properly. You know what I appreciated? The little touches like decent hangers and enough outlets near the bed — small stuff that shows they actually think about what travelers need.
Breakfast and Daily Rhythms
The breakfast setup is pretty solid for a three-star place — they do both continental and buffet style, so you’ve got options depending on your mood. The coffee is actually good (not always a given in hotel breakfast rooms), and they usually have some local touches mixed in with the standard European breakfast fare. I found myself lingering there in the mornings, partly because the restaurant area has these big windows that give you a nice view of the street life starting up for the day.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t an upscale property, but it gets the fundamentals right in a way that matters. The location score of 9.3 isn’t just a number — it reflects how this place puts you right where you want to be without the premium prices of the fancier hotels closer to the water. The staff seems to genuinely care about helping you navigate the city, and there’s reliable WiFi throughout (always a relief). For couples especially, there’s something about being on a quieter street that still connects you to everything that just works. It’s the kind of place where you spend your days exploring Stockholm and come back feeling like you’re staying somewhere that locals might actually recommend.

Reviews of Birka Hotel
Magda from United Kingdom (8/10)
Great location within walking distance to the central train station and old town. Comfortable beds and friendly staff.
Michal from Poland (7/10)
A small room in a small hotel in the middle of expensive city. One doesn't go there for comfort but for reasonable price. Stuff is doing great job, though.
Jeanne from United States (7/10)
The staff were very pleasant and helpful. I liked that it was necessary to enter a code prior to entering the hotel. It was in a great location, close to a metro stop and easy walking distance to many sites. It is located on a quiet street with no traffic or bars close by. The breakfast buffet was very good, both hot and cold foods, plenty of choices. I booked the economy double room which was exactly as pictured on the website. It was a compact room with a small, but adequate bathroom. The shower had good water pressure and hot water.

The hotel location was a stones throw away from the Tube which made getting around the city exceptionally easy. The staff were extremely helpful & friendly. My room was always warm which was welcoming after a day exploring the sub zero temperatures. The choice of food at breakfast was excellent and it was constantly topped up 👌🏼
