Lord Nelson Hotel Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to the Lord Nelson Hotel on Västerlånggatan, you immediately know you’re somewhere special. This three-star gem sits right in the cobblestone heart of Gamla stan — Stockholm‘s medieval old town — and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The building itself has that weathered charm you’d expect from one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centers, though don’t expect anything too flashy from the entrance. The historic facade tells stories of centuries past, while the welcoming atmosphere draws visitors from around the world.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re literally in the middle of everything that makes Stockholm magical. Step outside and you’re surrounded by narrow medieval streets, colorful 17th-century buildings, and that distinctly Scandinavian atmosphere. The Royal Palace is maybe a three-minute walk, and you can easily stroll to Stortorget (the main square) for those classic Stockholm photos. What’s really nice is that couples seem to get this location — they’ve rated it 9.7, which makes total sense when you’re wandering these romantic streets at sunset. The neighborhood buzzes with authentic Swedish culture and timeless European charm.

The Room Experience

Now, let me be honest about the room situation — this is a three-star property in a historic building, so don’t expect sprawling suites. The rooms are compact but thoughtfully designed, and there’s something cozy about staying in a building that’s probably older than most countries. The windows often look out onto those narrow Gamla stan streets, which means you get authentic medieval views but also the occasional sound of late-night revelers (it comes with the territory). The beds are comfortable enough, and you know what? After a full day exploring Stockholm, you’ll sleep just fine in these charming accommodations.

Breakfast & Amenities

The continental breakfast is pretty standard fare — nothing that’ll blow you away, but it gets the job done. Think pastries, coffee, some cold cuts, and the basics you need to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. I actually appreciate that they keep it simple rather than trying to oversell what they offer. The staff tends to be helpful with local recommendations, which matters more than fancy amenities when you’re in such a prime location. You’ll find the service attentive and the atmosphere welcoming throughout your stay, with genuine Swedish hospitality.

Why Guests Love It

It’s about waking up in the heart of one of Europe’s most beautiful old towns. You’re paying for location, location, location, and in this case, it’s absolutely worth it. The 7.9 rating reflects what this place actually is: a solid, no-nonsense base for exploring Stockholm’s most atmospheric neighborhood. When you can walk to the Nobel Museum, browse medieval streets, and catch ferries to other parts of the city all within minutes, those compact rooms start feeling like a pretty smart trade-off. This hotel delivers genuine value for travelers seeking authentic Stockholm experiences with unmatched historical ambiance.

Stockholm hotels keep design lovers close to Nordic museums, fika cafés, and waterfront cycling paths.

Quaint and quirky. Location is simply the best. Staff were fantastic. Breakfast simple but great and all that was needed to set you up for the day. Would stay again in a heartbeat

  • Harry from United Kingdom (8/10)

Very basic, but was comfy and had everything you need. Perfect location for the old town

  • Hayley from Australia (8/10)

Loved it for the location and quirkiness. The breakfast was simple but delicious, and staff very helpful. Location in old town was lovely. We had a family room which was well laid out so bunk beds are slightly around a corner, almost like a separate space but not quite. It was small but sufficient.

  • Mick from United States (9/10)

Excellent location in the very center of the old town. Best value in the area. Very clean, very good breakfast (including hard boiled eggs!), the furnishings and the linens in my room were new and of high-quality and the bathroom floor had radiant heat! This super boutique hotel has awesome appeal and character, and has a common library room with a full glass wall overlooking one of the most appealing old town streets…plus, there is a rooftop deck which is mine boggling…Awesome!

  • Christine from United Kingdom (9/10)

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. I very much enjoyed the area surrounding the hotel. Gamla Stan is a great tourist destination, it's smack in the middle of several landmarks, and there are quite a number of shops, cafes, and more in less than a minute's walk.
