Långholmen Hotell Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Långholmen Hotell feels like discovering Stockholm’s best-kept secret. This three-star gem sits on Långholmen island, tucked away from the tourist crowds but still incredibly close to everything that matters in Stockholm. I mean, you’re literally staying on a former prison island — how cool is that? The building itself has this fascinating history as a converted prison, and honestly, they’ve done something pretty special with the transformation.
The Island Location
Here’s what I love about staying here — you get that peaceful island vibe while being just minutes from Södermalm’s buzzing streets. The location gets rave reviews for good reason, especially from couples who seem to really appreciate the romantic setting. You can walk across the bridge to mainland Stockholm in about five minutes, but when you come back to your room at night, it feels like you’re escaping to your own little retreat. The views over the water are actually stunning, and there’s something magical about watching the city lights reflect on the harbor from this quiet spot.
Rooms and Comfort
The rooms definitely show their prison heritage — but in the most charming way possible. Some still have the original small windows and thick walls, which actually makes them incredibly quiet and cozy. Don’t worry though, they’re nothing like actual prison cells anymore. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are modern, and there’s this interesting mix of historical character with updated amenities that works really well. You know what surprised me? How well they’ve managed to make spaces that could feel claustrophobic actually feel intimate and unique instead.
Food and Breakfast
The restaurant here gets serious praise, and after eating there, I totally get why. They serve everything from continental breakfast to full English options, plus they actually do vegetarian and vegan choices really well — not just as an afterthought. The breakfast buffet has this great selection, and you can eat outside when the weather’s nice, looking out over the water. I’d honestly recommend having dinner here too, because the food quality is way better than you’d expect from a three-star hotel, and the atmosphere in the evening is pretty special.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both historic and comfortable at the same time. The free parking is a huge bonus if you’re driving in Stockholm — trust me, that’s not easy to find in the city. But mostly, people fall for the unique character of the place and that perfect balance of being close to everything but feeling removed from the chaos. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay memorable, and there’s this relaxed, almost boutique-like atmosphere despite the reasonable prices. It’s one of those places where the story of the building becomes part of your Stockholm experience, rather than just being a place to sleep.
Stockholm hotels keep design lovers close to Nordic museums, fika cafés, and waterfront cycling paths.

The room was small but clean, it matched the photos. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was lovely.
Sharie from United States (9/10)
Extremely clean and well furnished throughout the property. As expected, the rooms are small but there is a large guest kitchen, and plenty of sitting areas (both private or not) around the hotel. And being the holidays, the decorations around the hotel were really cute and cozy! The restaurant food was delicious and the ambiance was lovely with a wood burning stove and comfy places to sit. I highly recommend this hotel, especially for the price, it was an absolute deal.
John from United States (8/10)
Originally a prison, the facility has been renovated into a hotel, complete with cells and cellblocks and lots of prison memorabilia. Very interesting. Ideally located for me to visit friends in Södermalm. Excellent breakfast.

excellent location of the hotel, very tasty breakfasts and a special atmosphere. I liked that the hotel was made in the format of a museum and the owners were able to preserve the spirit of the place.

Special beautiful historical place with comfortable cells, wonderful staff and great breakfast. Lovely surroundings on an island, beach straight across from the building.
