Hotel Skeppsholmen, Stockholm, a Member of Design Hotels Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Skeppsholmen, Stockholm, a Member of Design Hotels honestly feels like discovering a secret — you’re on this quiet island that most tourists never even know exists, yet you’re literally minutes from Stockholm‘s bustling city center. The building itself is this beautifully restored 1699 naval barracks, and I mean, the history just hits you immediately. It’s got that Scandinavian design thing down perfectly without being cold or sterile, which can be tricky to pull off in a four-star property. The attention to detail throughout the hotel reflects a commitment to both heritage preservation and contemporary comfort.
The Island Setting
Here’s what’s brilliant about Skeppsholmen — you get to stay on an actual island (connected by a bridge, don’t worry) that’s basically Stockholm’s cultural heart. The Modern Art Museum is right there, along with the East Asian Museum, and honestly, just wandering around the island in the morning with your coffee is pretty magical. Couples absolutely love this spot, and I can see why — there’s something romantic about being surrounded by water while still being able to walk to Gamla Stan in about fifteen minutes. The island location offers a unique blend of cultural immersion and peaceful retreat.
The Room Experience
The rooms here are what I’d call “thoughtfully minimal” — clean lines, natural materials, and these massive windows that actually make you want to spend time looking outside. The beds are genuinely comfortable (and I’m picky about this), which explains why so many guests keep coming back. Each room feels more like a carefully curated space than a typical hotel setup, with local art and design pieces that actually mean something rather than generic hotel artwork. The minimalist aesthetic creates an atmosphere of calm sophistication.
Dining and Daily Rhythms
The restaurant situation here is solid — they focus on Nordic cuisine that doesn’t feel forced or overly trendy. Breakfast is particularly good, with local ingredients and that Swedish attention to quality you hope for but don’t always get. What I really appreciate is how the staff seems to genuinely care about the food rather than just going through the motions. The whole dining experience feels integrated with the hotel’s design philosophy, creating memorable meals that reflect the region’s culinary traditions.
Why Guests Love It
There’s parking available, which honestly is a huge deal in Stockholm — most hotels in the city center either don’t have it or charge ridiculous amounts. But beyond the practical stuff, this place has developed quite a following of repeat guests, and after staying here, I get it. It’s that rare combination of being somewhere special (an island hotel in a historic building) while still being completely accessible to everything Stockholm has to offer. You can walk to the ferry terminals, explore the archipelago during the day, then return to this peaceful, design-forward space that feels completely removed from tourist chaos. The hotel successfully balances exclusivity with accessibility.
Exploring Stockholm layers royal palaces, archipelago breezes, and twilight walks beneath pastel skies.

Breakfast was a little chaotic when busy due to the narrowness of the room, but that is a small issue. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food very nice and plentiful and the overall ambience was very tranquil and charming.
Our room was very nice, spacious and comfortable with a very nice shower.
The location is great with a regular ferry service to Djursgaard island with the many museums and attractions it has to offer, the ferry also goes directly to the Old Town which is very charming with lots of shops and restaurants. It is also possible to walk into Old Town easily in around 20 minutes.Jeremy from United Kingdom (9/10)
Breakfast was a veritable feast with a huge choice of food. The location was perfect with lovely views; it was quiet and peaceful but within walking distance of the beautiful old town. The rooms were spotlessly clean and maintained as such throughout our stay. The staff were delightful.

Fabulous location. Right by ferry pick up to old town, peaceful as no other hotels near by. The food was excellent when we had dinner one evening. The breakfast was amazing – everything anybody could want and very fresh and hot. The staff were lovely, really friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
