Hotel Hellstens Malmgård Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Hellstens Malmgård on Brännkyrkagatan, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical chain hotel. The building has this understated Swedish charm that feels authentically Stockholm — no flashy signs or marble lobbies, just solid Nordic design that’s been thoughtfully preserved. It’s a three-star property, but honestly, the attention to detail makes it feel more special than that rating suggests.
The Södermalm Advantage
The location is absolutely brilliant, and I mean that — you’re right in the heart of Södermalm, which locals will tell you is the coolest district in the city. From here, you can walk to Gamla Stan in about fifteen minutes, but more importantly, you’re surrounded by the kind of authentic Stockholm life that tourists usually miss. The vintage shops, cozy cafés, and that distinctly bohemian vibe that makes Söder so special are all right outside your door. I get why couples rate this spot so highly — there’s something genuinely romantic about wandering these cobblestone streets together.
Your Room and Comfort
The room I stayed in was compact but cleverly designed — very Swedish in that way where every square meter serves a purpose. The beds are properly comfortable (which isn’t always a given in boutique properties), and the windows actually open, something you’ll appreciate during those bright summer nights. The decor strikes this nice balance between historical character and modern functionality, though don’t expect cutting-edge tech or oversized bathrooms. What you get instead is a space that feels genuinely cozy rather than corporate.
Morning Fuel and Practical Perks
The breakfast buffet is surprisingly good for a smaller hotel — they’ve got the Swedish classics covered, plus enough international options that you won’t feel limited. I actually found myself looking forward to it each morning, which says something. What really sets this place apart though is the parking situation — having private spots available in central Stockholm is honestly a game-changer if you’re driving. Most hotels in this area will send you to some expensive garage blocks away, so this is a real advantage.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s what I think makes Hotel Hellstens Malmgård work so well — it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. You’re not getting five-star amenities or a concierge who knows everyone in town, but you are getting an authentic Stockholm experience in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay pleasant, and there’s this relaxed atmosphere that lets you settle in and explore the city like you actually live here. For the price point and location, it’s honestly hard to beat — especially if you want to experience Stockholm beyond the tourist trail.

Not your faceless hotel chain! Hellstens Malmgård is located in a beautiful old building with a nice surrounding garden and very tasteful interior. The room was nice, comfy, and very quiet. The breakfast offered a good choice; coffee and tea were available outside breakfast hrs. The location of the hotel is very convenient with restaurants, grocery store and a fabulous bakery within easy walking distance. Subway is about 300 m. off and will take you directly to the city centre in 10 min. The staff are outstandingly friendly and helpful! Thank you! (If Sweden were not cashless. we gladly would have given a tip!)

Great location, near bus and metro but in a quiet side street. Old farm building with characterful decor but modern facilities. Very polite and friendly staff. Plentiful breakfast with a good range of choices. Coffee lounge open at all times. External ramps and internal lifts for those with mobility challenges.
Laura from Finland (8/10)
Breakfast was good, everything we needed. We had a room in the 4th floor, very quiet. Bathroom was small, not for very tall people. If you look for something else than standard hotel this is your choice.
Very helpful staff.
