Stallmästaregården Hotel, Stockholm, a Member of Design Hotels Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Stallmästaregården Hotel, Stockholm, a Member of Design Hotels, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical city hotel. The building has this wonderful historic character that feels authentically Swedish — not the kind of forced charm you sometimes get with boutique properties. It’s positioned right at Norrtull, which honestly took me a moment to place on the map, but once you’re there, you realize it’s actually a pretty sweet spot. The four-star property manages to feel both refined and welcoming, with that particular Scandinavian approach to hospitality that never feels stuffy.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about the Norrtull area — you’re technically still in Stockholm, but it feels like you’ve escaped the tourist crowds without sacrificing accessibility. The location gets consistently high marks from guests, especially couples who seem to appreciate the quieter vibe. You’re close enough to central Stockholm that getting around isn’t a hassle, but far enough out that you can actually hear yourself think. I mean, there’s something to be said for being able to step outside without immediately bumping into cruise ship groups taking selfies.
The Rooms
The beds here are genuinely exceptional — and I’m someone who’s usually skeptical when hotels make a big deal about their mattresses. But guests consistently rave about the sleep quality, and after spending a night there, I get it. The rooms have that clean, minimalist Scandinavian design aesthetic without feeling cold or impersonal. There’s attention to detail in the furnishings and layout that suggests someone actually thought about how people use hotel rooms, rather than just how they photograph.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast buffet is solid — nothing revolutionary, but executed well with quality ingredients that feel distinctly Swedish. You know what I appreciated? They don’t try to do everything; instead, they focus on doing the classics right. Fresh bread, good coffee, local specialties that actually taste like they’re supposed to. It’s the kind of breakfast that sets you up properly for a day of exploring Stockholm, rather than leaving you feeling sluggish or overstuffed.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something telling about the fact that Stallmästaregården Hotel has more repeat guests than most other properties — that’s not usually something you see unless a place is doing something right. The combination of the peaceful Norrtull location, consistently comfortable accommodations, and that understated Swedish hospitality creates an experience that feels more authentic than many city hotels. It’s particularly appealing if you want to experience Stockholm without being in the thick of the tourist zone, but still have easy access when you want it. The high guest ratings aren’t just numbers — they reflect a property that understands what travelers actually want from their stay.
Stockholm hotels keep design lovers close to Nordic museums, fika cafés, and waterfront cycling paths.

We stayed in the Family Room/Junior Suite – Split Level which was two stories. The stairs are VERY steep so be warned if you have mobility issues, they would be a challenge.Cathy from New Zealand (8/10)
