Scandic Gamla Stan Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Scandic Gamla Stan feels like stepping into Stockholm’s living history — and I mean that in the best possible way. This four-star hotel sits right on Lilla Nygatan, one of those narrow cobblestone streets that makes Gamla Stan so enchanting. The building itself has that perfect Swedish blend of medieval charm and modern comfort that you just can’t fake.
Location & Neighborhood
Honestly, you couldn’t ask for a better spot to explore Stockholm. You’re literally in the heart of the Old Town, surrounded by those Instagram-worthy colored buildings and winding alleys that date back to the 13th century. The Royal Palace is practically next door — I’m talking a three-minute walk — and you can easily stroll to the Nobel Museum or catch a ferry to Djurgården. What really struck me is how quiet it gets at night, despite being so central.
The tourist crowds thin out after dinner, and you get this magical sense of having the medieval streets almost to yourself. This balance between accessibility and tranquility is genuinely rare for a hotel in such a prominent location. You’re never far from world-class dining, galleries, and cultural attractions, yet the atmosphere remains intimate and peaceful.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this wonderful mix of Scandinavian minimalism and historical character. You know what I loved? The way they’ve preserved some of the original architectural details while keeping everything feeling fresh and contemporary. The beds are seriously comfortable — that Nordic approach to sleep quality really shows. Some rooms have views over the cobblestone streets below, which is pretty special when you wake up in the morning and remember where you are.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast buffet here actually surprised me in a good way. It’s not just the usual hotel spread — they’ve got proper Swedish specialties alongside the international options. I mean, where else can you start your day with gravlax and crisp bread while looking out at medieval Stockholm? The restaurant area has this cozy, intimate feel that works whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or settling in for a proper meal.
The staff seems to genuinely know their stuff about local recommendations too, which always makes a difference. They can point you toward hidden gems in the neighborhood that most guidebooks miss, adding real value to your stay.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something really special about staying right in Gamla Stan that you just can’t replicate from a modern hotel district. Couples especially seem to get it — that exceptional location rating from couples tells you everything you need to know about the romantic factor here. You’re steps away from candlelit dinners, evening walks along the waterfront, and those picture-perfect moments that make Stockholm so memorable. The fact that you can explore the Old Town early in the morning or late at night, when it’s peaceful and atmospheric, honestly makes this place worth considering over other options across the water.
Stockholm hotels keep design lovers close to Nordic museums, fika cafés, and waterfront cycling paths.

Reviews of Scandic Gamla Stan

Really a nice hotel! The location is perfect to explore Stockholm, in the middle of the old town with pubs, restaurants, and sights within a few footsteps, yet since it is one road down from the main pedestrian thoroughfares of the old town, it is absolutely quiet. The rooms are in a really cool style of an older house but the bathroom and facilities are absolutely up to date. The breakfast was superb! A huge choice of local Swedish food, as well as the classical bacon, eggs, and sausage stuff, a large choice of good bread, smoothies and fruit.

Situated perfectly just one street off from the old town. A small hotel in a quiet street only one street away from all of the bars and restaurants and shops. The hotel does not have a bar and we did not have breakfast but this is not needed as everything is at your doorstep. Our room was clean, the beds were really comfortable and the decor was very much of a vintage style that was really lovely.

The breakfast was super! Lots of choices, fresh fruit, eggs, cheese, meats, cereal, etc. The kitchen staff was very friendly and accommodating. Definitely a highlight. Rooms were spacious. Very quiet rooms. Also the location is wonderful… very close to the Metro, which we used to get to and from the airport. Otherwise we walked all over! Good restaurants just down the street. Enjoyed both Lilla Gastabud and Slingerbulten.
