Hotel Rival Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Rival on Mariatorget, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical Stockholm hotel. The building has this understated elegance that feels distinctly Swedish — not flashy, but confident in its own skin. I mean, when you’re sitting right on one of Södermalm’s most charming squares, you don’t need to try too hard. The four-star property manages to strike that perfect balance between boutique intimacy and professional polish that honestly makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s the thing about Södermalm — it’s where Stockholmers actually want to hang out, and Hotel Rival puts you right in the thick of it. Mariatorget is this lovely little square that locals use as their living room, especially during those endless summer evenings when the sun barely sets. You’re a quick walk from the trendy shops along Götgatan, and the Old Town is just across the water. What I love is that couples seem to get it — they’ve rated the location 9.6, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about wandering these cobblestone streets together, ducking into cozy cafés or just people-watching from the square.
The Room Experience
The rooms at Hotel Rival have this clean, Scandinavian aesthetic that never feels cold or sterile. Actually, what struck me most was how well I slept — and apparently I’m not alone, because guests consistently rave about the beds here. The rooms aren’t huge (this is Stockholm, after all), but they’re thoughtfully designed with plenty of natural light and those little touches that show someone was paying attention. You know what I appreciate? The way they’ve managed to feel both modern and timeless, which isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Dining & Breakfast
Honestly, the food here surprised me in the best way possible. Hotel restaurants can be hit or miss, but Hotel Rival has clearly put real effort into their culinary game — guests consistently mention the meals as a highlight. The breakfast spread is particularly impressive, with proper vegetarian and gluten-free options that don’t feel like afterthoughts. It’s a generous buffet that actually makes you want to get up early, which is saying something. I found myself lingering over coffee longer than planned, watching the square come to life through the windows.
Why Guests Love It
What keeps people coming back to Hotel Rival isn’t just one thing — it’s how everything works together. The location score of 9.6 speaks for itself, but it’s more than just being well-positioned. It’s the way the hotel feels connected to its neighborhood rather than isolated from it. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience, the beds are legitimately comfortable, and there’s even private parking available (which, trust me, is worth its weight in gold in central Stockholm). It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re experiencing the real Stockholm, not just visiting it.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Rival in Stockholm for one night, and I can confidently say it was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had! From the moment we arrived, the front of house staff, Cecille and Svedje, went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of fantastic. Their warm welcome and attentive service made us feel right at home.
The hotel itself is a lovely, cozy retreat in a fantastic location, making it easy to explore all that Stockholm has to offer. Our room was beautifully appointed with crisp, fresh bedding that provided the perfect sanctuary after a day of sightseeing. It truly felt like a little haven in the city!
After such a wonderful experience, we decided to rebook at Rival for later in the week, even canceling our other hotel plans. It’s hard to find such a gem in the city center, and we knew we wanted to return to the comfort and hospitality that Cecille and Svedje provided.
If you're looking for a charming hotel with an unbeatable location and exceptional staff, look no further than Rival. We can’t wait for our next visit! Highly recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Jane from United Kingdom (10/10)
